The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has put together 5 simple tips to help you lodge your tax return correctly this year.

  1. Firstly, check out this handy guide for medical professionals to see what work-related expenses you can and can’t claim this year.
  2. As a frontline worker, it’s also important you understand which COVID -19 related purchases are tax deductible. You can claim a deduction for COVID-19 tests you paid for from 1 July 2021, if you:
    • used the test for a work-related purpose
    • had a qualifying COVID-19 test (PCR test or RAT)
    • have a record of your purchase (you can now store receipts in the ATO App)
    • paid for the test yourself and were not already reimbursed by your employer.
  3.  If you’re an investor, the ATO has factsheets about rental property repairs, maintenance, and capital gains tax, along with tax smart tips for crypto.
  4. If you’ve donated to charity, you may be able to claim a deduction in your tax return – just make sure your gift or donation was to an approved organisation (an organisation with the status of a deductible gift recipient).
  5. Finally, if you’ve been working from the comfort of your own home, you won’t be able to claim your new coffee cup, but you might be able to claim some other working from home expenses.
